Veer's superficial look at the world of cycling

I guess I should say this right off the bat: Any documentary that attempts to glamorize the often-ridiculous Portland bike scene is not a movie for me. Yet, anytime a local filmmaker manages to not only make but actually get their indie film seen around the country, it deserves a look.

So with that in mind I watched the new documentary Veer, created by Greg Fredette. It follows a few different groups of bike enthusiasts—both normal and freakish in variety—as they drink beer, ride their bikes, drink beer while riding their bikes, ride their bikes while drinking beer … you get the idea.

After the movie was over, I realized I was right, the movie was not for me. In fact, it isn’t for anyone. It’s really awful.

I say that with a heavy heart. There needs to be more people who take a risk and decide to invest so much of their time, and dollars, into making a film. But if they do that, they should make sure that they are putting that time and money into something worthwhile, not a self-indulgent piece of fluff that plants its feet way too close to its subjects to be anything but clichéd and boring.

Veer, which is currently making the rounds at film festivals and special screenings as far out as New York, attempts to follow the adventures of those quirky, oft-mustached, bespectacled, weirdly-skinny bikers that populate Portland with the ubiquity of rats in a subway tunnel.

Contempt you say? Yes.

I didn’t realize I had such hatred for these people until I watched the movie, and I can’t pinpoint exactly why. All I know is I have a weird desire to make quick right hand turns in my Honda without checking the side-view mirror. Just kidding.

But in trying to portray these bikers as wacky, fun-loving outcasts with nothing better to do than ride around and act like children, Fredette gives us a movie with no purpose.

If you’ve read any local newspaper or blog you know the groups that this film covers inside and out: the Zoobombers, The Sprockettes, the numerous bike co-ops around town.

The idea of a bicycle-themed dance troupe, like the Sprockettes, or a bunch of daredevils flying at dangerous speeds down a highway, like the Zoobombers, could be of interest to someone with no previous knowledge of the subjects, but only if they really got into what makes these people tick. Instead we are treated to drawn-out, slow-motion scenes of them riding around town, or doing their clunky dances, while we watch and wonder what these people are all about.

Veer does manage to portray a few, slightly engrossing topics—the struggles to make bike riding safe in the wake of much-reported car vs. bike deaths and the less vital, but still interesting, struggles of a bike repair shop owner trying to balance his love with the harsh realities of finance.

Still, like much else in the movie, these stories are surface only. We only get enough to tease us with the possibilities of what could come from a deeper look at Portland’s bike scene.

What’s with all the beer drinking? The obsession with irony? The rebellion? The kids’ bikes?

Sadly we may just have to wait for answers to these and many other questions when a real film is made about the culture. Until then, I’ll see you at the gas tank.

I can't wait to see the movie... I hope it makes people start "speed-walking" again...

Hahahahahahahahaha.

None of these opinions are new. Talking constant holier than thou trash about hipsters and the growing bike culture in Portland is more annoying than the hipsters themselves.

All I can think is...."Seriously, Vanguard?" Way to alienate probably more then half of your readership.

I don't feel an apology is necessary for the "quick right-hand turn" jibe. I mean, this is a movie review. It's supposed to be entertaining, not PC.

More pathetic, negative, and unprofessional content from a newspaper that seems to have decided to stir up pointless controversy in order to keep itself relevant.

"Had Mr. Harger done a review of an African American film and then said "I didn’t realize I had such hatred for 'these people' until I watched the movie, and I can’t pinpoint exactly why. All I know is I have a weird desire kill or seriously injure one of them," people would be outraged."

Whoa! Somebody needs to unpack their invisible knapsack. I would like to remind the Portland bike community that as a group they are absolutely not a persecuted or oppressed class, nor the victims of a system of institutionalized inequalities based on hundreds of years of power imbalance and discrimination. Yes, you may be occasionally made fun of, sometimes despised, and sometimes the unfortunate victims of random, tragic accidents, but your choice to ride bikes does not and will likely never bar you from equal access to education, housing, employment, health care, food, clean water, safety, etc. Please, please PLEASE don’t liken cyclists to African Americans or any other marginalized group. It’s untrue, unfair and a thousand times more offensive, pretentious and ignorant than anything written in Mr. Harger’s article.

Advocating harm to any person because they happen to identifiable as a member of a social group is hate speech, plain and simple. Mr. Harger should be removed from the paper. The editor's apology didn't go far enough.

You bicyclists are seriously ridiculous. While I do agree the comment he made about the right hand turn was tasteless, some of the other things he talked about in the article is very true. The Portland biker scene is getting way to elitist, I love to ride bike, but because I don't look the part of a true "biker", I have had people called me poser and this and that, when in reality, I just like to get some fresh air. You bicyclists need to practice what you preach, which is toleration before you can start bad-mouth some one else. There's a comment that compare Harger to Rush Limbaugh which I find incredibly ignorance. Just because some one make a mean joke about bicyclist, doesn't mean that they are Republican. It's OBVIOUS to me when reading the article that it was meant as a joke, the comment does not encourage violence against bicyclists in anyway. Bicyclists in Portland need to stop acting like they're the minority and oppressed by society. You guys are seriously becoming like those crazy PETA people.

Reading the comments offended me more than the article. Ok the whole running over thing... stupid joke. But do you actually think he's trying to promote people running over cyclists? Come on.. you people are fucking ridiculous. You look at what your arguing about, a movie about bicycles....

Mr. Harger should resign from the Vanguard immediately. This sort of thing is why the Vanguard is an embarrassment to the university.

Thank you Captain America and W.T. for representing! Being one with the Zoobomb brethren, I would like to just add one thing to their comments: Zoobomb is 99.99% ALL INCLUSIVE. It is antithetical to elitism, so we invite all you naysayers and bikers snubbed in the past by some evil hipster. Come join us! And you don't have to drink beer if you don't want to -- I know I don't.

Peace,

YES! I'm glad someone actually called the bike hipster crowd on their game. I'd say the majority of bikers are doing just that, biking, because it's convenient and enviro friendly. It's the bike hipster crowd, with their need to portray an image that gives the Portland scene a bad name. See the blog/book Stuff White People Like for a better explanation of Portland culture than I could ever give.

Also, for all you hipster douche bags whining about how he's promoting violence against cyclists, get off your high horse. It's called free speech. Also, learn to spell. It goes a long way to making your argument more credible. Oh, and your far more detailed and violent threats just make you look more like the fanatical wackos that you are.

The comment below me had it right:
" Oh man.. I've been interested in getting involved in cycling around Portland for awhile, but the bike culture I've seen has always seemed/come off as super elitist. These comments are kind of proving that point."

Exactly. Before I moved here, I biked all the time if I wasn't walking. I've biked down the coast a few times. The bike culture of Portland turns me off so much that I don't feel like riding any more.

Chill out people. It was tasteless but come on, you're wasting time you could be surfing the net for porn, drinking beer, cycling, ext. Each finger tap I spend replying to this shit is just one more second I waste, I could be doing sit ups, eating chicken, discovering a cure for cancer.... ext. He wants a response, obviously, and you're playing in. P.S threatening him proves your no better than his tasteless joke, and really then the joke is one you.

Dude, go ahead and put down the movie, but to make jokes about the deadly "right hook" .....thats low. I'm sure the families of the recently killed bikers will feel very hurt when they read your comments. You are an idiot! Beer rules!

This is not funny and is in complete bad taste. You are essentially joking about killing or seriously injuring a person. I am very surprised that this quote was printed. The rest of the article is your opinion and that's fine but I think an apology is in order.

I'm embarrassed that you employed as a voice for PSU. I have a feeling this movie wouldn't have thrilled me much either, but I suggest that anyone paid to write a movie review will at least have a sentence-worth of constructive feedback. Your jokes and general attitude about cyclists are completely inappropriate. And the "Portland bike scene" is multi-faceted; something you have apparently overlooked in your sweeping use of the term. There are many cyclists who conduct themselves safely on the road (helmets, lights, signals, etc.), and I'm sorry for those who give us a bad name. I suggest you write your articles with a grander scope of vision, and avoid the snarky comments.

obviously the amount of time you spend writing crappy work for a pointless newspaper that practically no one reads leaves you bitter and you feel you must tear down other people and the things that give their life meaning and joy to ffill your life with some semblance of it. kudos.
