Bush signs new GI Bill

Student veterans will soon be covered by $63 billion education assistance bill

President Bush signed a new GI Bill on Monday aimed at providing the full cost for college or job training for those who served after Sept. 11, 2001. The GI Bill will extend to activated reservists and National Guardsmen with benefits paid proportionally to the number of months in active duty.

Jacob Meeks, the president of the Student Veteran Association (SVA) at PSU, an organization recently responsible for helping to raise money for scholarships for veterans and a summer retreat for new association leadership, has spoken with both Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Senator Gordon Smith (R-Ore.) about the GI Bill.

SALP brings in new assistant director

Natalee Webb will take on new position as interim assistant dean of students

After serving as interim assistant director of Student Activities and Leadership Programs (SALP) for the 2007-08 academic year, Natalee Webb was not hired to permanently fill the position. Dominic Thomas will become the new assistant director, following a decision made by SALP Director Aimee Shattuck on June 24.

Shattuck said she wanted to support all of her staff members in their career goals, and help them further their skills and experiences, even if that meant doing so elsewhere in the PSU community.

Former DACA coordinator Michael Malinowski passes away at the age of 42 from a heart attack on June 17

Michael Malinowski, a former student and campus accessibility advocate, died of a heart attack June 24 while giving a presentation on Web site accessibility. Malinowski served as the coordinator for the Disabilities Advocacy Cultural Association (DACA) during the 2006-07 academic year.

Malinowski worked on several projects around campus, including what could become a Disabilities Studies minor for PSU, as well as a program that would construct a solar-powered wheelchair recharging station on campus.

CUTCO Cutlery advertises positions to students using pencils, fliers, postings

Scattered on bulletin boards, tables and phone booths across campus are various fliers and postings for employment, one of which is for workforstudents.com, a flier advertising $12 to $16 per base/appointment. The flier promises students real work experience and the possibility for a highly sought after internship.

Workforstudents.com is a Web site for Vector Marketing, the selling arm for CUTCO Cutlery, aimed at recruiting potential salespeople. The Web site has some brief informational pages giving background on the company, mostly boasting its successes.
