A glimpse inside the adversity, team bonding and heart of the Vikings

By Owen Smith

It's a little past noon on April 16, and in four hours, the Portland State softball team will walk on to Howe Field in Eugene to play the Oregon Ducks. Yet, the impending game seems far from the minds of the athletes.

They are spread throughout a massive touring bus, some listening to iPods, while others chat or study. A couple of hours with nothing much to do is welcomed respite from a hectic schedule that allows for little else than school, practice, working out and playing games.

By Nathan Hellman

Even after Portland State's 80-play Spring Game Saturday, the Vikings outlook for the regular season is still fuzzy.

To start, it is not entirely clear who will lead the Vikings' attack at quarterback. It is still up in air which wide receivers the starting signal caller will target as key weapons. It is unknown whether young secondary players will pan out. And the Portland State offensive line appears to be a work in progress.
