How to Make Better Use of Your Saturday

Ah, Saturday! It’s not Friday, so you’re not tired from a long day at work. It’s not Sunday, so Monday isn’t looming too closely overhead. It’s the perfect day and, if you don’t have plans, you get it all to yourself. With all this valuable time, you might be wondering, “How do I really make the best use of my Saturday?” You wouldn’t want to let all that free time go to waste or squander it watching TV, weekend after weekend. If you want to know how to get the most out of your Saturdays, look no further. The following list was made especially for you.

Rest (Actually Rest)

You might think you’re getting a weekend because you’re not at work. However, just because you’re not crunching numbers at your desk doesn’t mean you’re not working. If all you’re doing is cleaning, studying, putting up with people, running errands, and solving problems, you’re not really getting a break. Life can be crazy, but there’s almost always something we could cut back on. If you need to simplify your life to be sure that Saturday is actually a day of rest, go for it. You need at least one day a week to completely unplug, breathe deeply, and let yourself unwind.

Learn a New Skill

You don’t want to be boring when you’re old. However, if all you do is work and watch television, you’re on the fast track to becoming blah. Instead of letting a television live your life, get out there and learn some new skills. If you’re in Waikiki, HI, take some surfing lessons. If you’re in Vermont, learn how to downhill skill. Take some sort of class, like art, dance, martial arts or cooking. With every passing year, you can become better at more things and have more skills in your repertoire. A Saturday morning class still leaves plenty of time for relaxation later in the day, and you’ll be a more well-rounded person.

Volunteer

Possibly the most valuable thing you can do with your Saturday is to volunteer. You can visit the elderly, volunteer with the Salvation Army, or lead tours for a historical site. You can also teach, put on shows for sick kids, put together a community event, or help with a non-profit fundraiser. There are hundreds of jobs just waited to be filled by someone who’s willing, and each one depends on the generosity of someone like you. To preserve history, bring joy, and make the world a better place, we should all be giving a little of our time.

Next time you feel a little restless on a Saturday, ask yourself if you’re making the best use of your time. Should you be resting more than you are? Should you be growing your mind and your set of skills? Should you be giving your time and improving your community? Whatever your Saturday needs, the next time you’re out of sorts, remember to take steps in the right direction.
